Steve Matthes, clarinetist with the Black Swan Classic Jazz Band since 1992, is a busy and versatile musician in the Corvallis area. Besides playing with Black Swan, he plays with Gratitude Jazz Band in Corvallis and Cork’s Crew in Eugene. Steve is in his 36th year of directing the Corvallis Community Band and conducts about fifteen concerts a year with that group.

Some career highlights include stints with UpTown Lowdown, Stumptown Jazz, Hume Street, Dr. Jon’s, OSU alumni jazz bands (including Homer Welch and George Bruns) and several other bands. He is a past director of the Oregon State University jazz band and pep band, and an assistant director of the OSU Marching and Symphonic bands. He has performed with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, Western Opera Theater orchestra, The Red Skelton Show orchestra, the OSU-Corvallis Symphony, as well as numerous other groups in the Corvallis area.

Steve is a retired Research Scientist with the National Energy Technology Laboratory (formerly The U.S. Bureau of Mines) in Albany , Oregon. He has numerous scientific papers and books to his credit, and he received one of President George H.W. Bush’s “1000 Points of Light” awards. He is a member of the Microwave Assisted Chemistry Hall of Fame.

An active Rotarian, Steve is past-president of the Rotary Club of Greater Albany, and a current assistant governor of Rotary District 5110.

Steve has contributed a number of great arrangements to Black Swan's library and a couple of fine original compositions as well: Sweet Mama Stringbean and Black Swan Glide.
